I’ve read that a positive thought is 100 times more powerful than a negative one. Have you ever thought of a person you have not seen in ages, and, suddenly, randomly, you hear from them? This is not just coincidence; it is the power the mind has to bring things into existence. How we think, whether positively or negatively, impacts not only how we see the world, but also what experiences we have. How does this relate to health and fitness? Bear with me…
When you have gained weight, what were your thoughts about that weight? Were they negative? Did you harp on what you perceive to be bad about your body? What happened? Most likely you gained more weight. Now, what if on the other hand, you thought your body looked great no matter how it looks now? What if you saw yourself as the best version of you no matter where you are now? What do you think would happen? As your thoughts change, your behaviors will change, and you will begin to drift towards your inner vision, your best self.
Let’s take this a step further. Do you find your workouts to be harder or easier based on your mood? If you are happy and positive, then the workouts do not seem as dreadful, no matter how hard. On the other hand, if you are negative or having a bad day, don’t those workouts seem harder? Over time those good or bad days can make or break your progress. Those that stay positive about exercise are more likely to continue the program and focus on accomplishments vs. perceived failures. Those that are or become negative will often get frustrated and quit. If you have never paid attention to your mood and exercise, start, I bet I am right.
Besides the benefits seen in the gym, thinking positively has other health benefits as well. First, positive people are more productive. People who are positive have happier and healthier relationships. Stress and depression are often associated with negativity, and, as such, those who are positive have much lower levels of stress. This leads to better immunity, and decreased sickness. Positive people have better heart health, lower blood pressure, are better able to deal with problems (because they will still come), and live longer. YES PLEASE!
So how do you deal with negativity and increase positivity in your life? Smile more….seriously….even if you don’t want to. Do yoga or meditate. This is a tough one for me, and takes practice. What is one sure fire and easy way to feel more positive? Help someone with their problems. As you give, you will feel better, and as an added bonus, open yourself to receive help with yours. It might sound simple enough, but once a negative thought enters your mind, be aware of it, and consciously change it. As with the meditation it may take practice, but there is something positive in every situation. It is up to you to find it. Use positive affirmations such as, I am…thin, strong, happy, etc.
Changing your thoughts from negative to positive can take time, but keep at it. In time you will feel your mood change, and your positivity will attract even more positivity. Try it, it works…. I’m positive.
